The quarter-finals were played as two double-headers over two days, one on the west coast and the other in the east. The third place match and final were also played as a double header in front of over 90,000 spectators, among them the President of the United States, Bill Clinton. If scores were level after 90 minutes extra-time was played during which the first team to score was declared the winner under the "Golden Goal" rule. Penalties would decide the match should there be no goal in extra time.

Norway overcame their Scandinavian rivals thanks to three goals that came in the second half. Sweden's 90th minute goal, scored by Moström came far too late to make any difference.

An own goal by Brandi Chastain gave Germany an early lead which was cancelled out by Milbrett (16') who pounced on a loose ball in the German penalty area. Bettina Wiegman then scored with a scorching drive to put Germany ahead again. Four minutes into the second half Chastain made up for her earlier mistake, crashing the ball home from six yards after a corner. The revitalised US team pressed hard and were rewarded after 65 minutes when MacMillan, just brought on as a substitute, drove a corner kick across the face of the German goal where Fawcett met it with a powerful header.

Brazil stormed into a three-goal lead in the first half, their third scored by Nenê whose long, looping effort from near the touch-line deceived the Nigerian goalkeeper and flew over her outstretched arms into the net. In the second half, the Super Falcons staged a dramatic come back and in the 85th minute Egbe crashed home the equaliser. In the 104th minute, Sissi scored the golden goal with a characteristic long range free-kick.

In the fifth minute the Brazilian goalkeeper failed to catch a cross, allowing Parlow, racing in behind her, to nod the ball into the undefended net. In the July heat (the match kicked off at 1.30pm) both teams struggled to make decent chances but in the 79th minute, Mia Hamm was pushed from behind as she broke into the Brazilian area with the ball and Akers converted the penalty.

What was expected to be a close game proved to be nothing of the sort and the Chinese handed Norway a thrashing. Given the enthusiastic response of the American public to the tournament and the quality of these two teams, it is a mystery why the attendance was so low.

The match kicked off at 10.30am and was the first part of a double header that included the final itself. With no goals after 90 minutes and to avoid a long delay to starting the final, the match went straight to penalties. After eight kicks the score was 4-4 when Aarønes missed her kick. Formiga kept her nerve and scored the winner.

In front of the largest crowd ever to witness a women's sporting event and in the heat of a California summer afternoon, the teams cancelled each other out and there were few clear cut chances. In the penalty shoot-out, Kristine Lilly saved Liu Ying's kick to give the US the advantage. With the score 4-4 Brandi Chastain stepped up to take the decisive kick, which on the instuctions of her coach who knew the Chinese had studied her technique, she took with her left foot. The ploy worked and photographs of her celebrations became one of the most iconic images of women's sport.
